1. Background History of Kachin People

Kachin forefathers elders (from age to age) tell younger generations that a group of people (Kachin) moved down slowly from Tibetan plateau (the so called Majoi Shingra Bum) to Western China and then to northern Myanmar in about ten century AD. They stopped in some fertile places such as Mahkum Madam (Mahkum Gang-China Boarder) Mali Hku Majoi, Chyai hku Majoi, and Hkrang Hku Majoi living there for some centuries. Manau Dance had been celebrated in Chyai Hku and Hkrang Hku Majoi. Manau dances usually celebrated for fraternity, prosperity, Victory, and for farewell among the brothers and close relatives. They departed a new people who have their own literature and Bible to different part of Northern Myanmar, Northeast India, And Yu Nan Province in China. And Northern and Eastern Shan State after Manau Dance at Hkrang Hku Majoi. Their religion was Nat Worshipping (animism) but they believed in the Creator God, the God of Omnipotence, Omniscience and Omnipresence. They called upon this God in time of great need. They called this God “Hpan Ningsang, Chye Ningchyang” (Creator and
Omniscience God). The major changes took place (in their life) when the British occupied Kachin land and when Christianity was accepted by the people. The six ethnic group of People Rawang,
Laovoh (Maru), Lachid (Lashi), A Zi (Zaiwa), Lisu and Jinghpaw belong to Kachin nationality.
We use Jinghpaw as our common language. There are about one million Kachins in Myanmar.

Life Without Friendship

Life without friendship...
is like the dawn without the sun.

Life without friendship...
is like the sky without the moon
when the evening has begun.

Life without friendship

is like singing a sound withou music...

Life without friendship......

is like walking alone in the dark

Life without friendship...
is like a rose without rain.

Life without friendship...
just wouldn't be the same.

Life without friendship...
is like a ship without a sea.

Life without friendship...
just could not be
without a friend like you for me.

Myanmar Hit By Cyclone Nargis

It is a shocking story for Myanmar (Burma) and a shameful response by the government to the public. The southern part of Myanmar was hit by cyclone Nargis on 2 and 3 of May. Its wind speeds were more than 192 kilometers (120 miles) an hour. The storm blew across the Irrawaddy Delta and the former capital Rangoon and included a total of 30 townships. According to official reports, the lives of up to 2.4 million cyclone victims in Myanmar are in danger from lack of food and drinking water. Of 2.4 million, 1.5 million people have been supported by International NGOs, the Red Cross and the UN. The Myanmar Government’s official death toll from 16 May shows that 77,738 people have been killed and 55,917 are missing.

A Tripartite Core Group (TCG), composed of representatives of the Government of Myanmar, ASEAN and the UN held the third donor conference to assist Burmese cyclone victims on 9 June. This team was officially launched in Yangon on 9 June and surveyed the affected townships between 10-19 June. Some staff from UN agencies have experienced difficulties in obtaining Visas. However, 86 international UN staff have visited the affected-areas on June 9. However some International NGOs members are experiencing difficulties at police check points.

For the emergency appeal, the Myanmar Cyclone Flash Appeal has raised US$ 201 millions. On June 9 firm contributions of US$ 82 million and a further US$ 51 million in uncommitted pledges were donated. The OCHA Financial Tracking System (FTS) shows that US$ 164 million and a further US$ 108 million have been committed to relief operations in Myanmar.

The “New Light of Myanmar” newspaper reports that Prime Minister General Thein Sein visited cyclone affected areas from 7-9 June, but his visit was meaningless. In my point of view, if the government urgently appeals foreign aid for cyclone victims, the thousand of lives will be saved.

The effect of globalization on my life.

With the development of modern society, hi-tech has been changing around the globe. In the same way, my hometown has been significantly dominated by hi-tech such as computers, the internet, cell phones, etc. A couple of decades ago, this was rare in Burma to see computer centers, the internet or phones within the community. The majority of people were not able to own such technological items because Burma is not an industrialized country, it is an agricultural country. On the other hand, those technologies cost an arm and a leg. Particularly, only some parts of urban areas and only governmental departments could afford to use them. Though some rich people used them, they were not being widely used in the way that we use them today. As a result, people could not communicate well among themselves, and news and media were limited, particularly for the community. When I was young, I did not know what the internet was and how to use it to communicate worldwide.

Nowadays, the effects of increasingly globalized technological systems on my hometown have obviously changed over the last few years. Computer and internet centers can be found everywhere and most families own at least either a computer or a phone at home. Especially among the new generation, hi-tech is very vital and it helps maintain their daily communication. Furthermore, the way of living has been continuously growing, because people can experience daily the latest news and what is going on today through the internet. As a result, most of the younger generation has been influenced by both the positive and negative effects of other cultures.

One positive aspect of globalization is that people who are too attached to their nationality and tradition are getting familiar with other foreign customs and social cultures. I have seen that following popular usage of the internet, people have more opportunities to observe the media. Today having the internet at home is very common for online shopping without moving, which is very useful and helpful for busy parents who have many responsibilities for their family and it is also less time consuming. So that, I would say in general, the lifestyle and the way of thinking in my society have evidently changed due to the development of globalization in my country.

Class report of background nationalities

It has been a great time exploring my classmates' background nationalities, which are really interesting stories. My class consist of 12 students, who are from different countries, but their similarity is educational background as they all are studying English as a second language. When I read their article "about me," I realized that all of my classmates really study hard. They all have high self-esteem and are very confident.

The majority of my classmates are from Asia; Indonesia, China and Burma. A few are from other countries such as Afghanistan, Iran and Samoa. They all have different reasons for coming to New Zealand. Political crisis is the most obvious reason. However, some students want to exprience challenges in a new country and have a better family life in a new society. Most of my classmates are married and a few of them are single. Some have children and some don't have any. They all have been here for different periods of time- from 10 years to a year.

Generally, I am impressed with the honesty of my classmates, though they are from specific social backgrounds, when they are in class, they all participate as one. All my classmates are not only charming but also humourous and helpful to people anytime. Being simple is one of the uniquenesses of my class. Interestingly, they are all really focussed on what they are determined to do.

About me

Kia Ora!

Hi! Everyone

Welcome to my blog! My name is Chang. I come from the northern part of Myanmar (Burma), a place full of natural diversity. My native town is also known as “Jade Land,” which means full of jade. I have been living in God Zone for over a year. Currently, I live in a suburb which is called Glen Eden.

When I look back to my childhood, family life is the most valuable aspect of my life. I have three brothers and three sisters. They all live in Burmar. Seriously, I can never forget the time I used to have dinner under the candlelight with my family. That was the greatest time I have ever had. Especially in winter, many varieties of flowers blossomed and the sound of birds' singing emerged everywhere, which was one of the most memorable and beautiful times in my life. Oh! …oh life is more mysterious than what I expected. When I was young, I went fishing, farming and hunting with my father and brother. I never thought about the day I would have to leave my family and country behind.

The 29th of March, 2003 was the beginning of my journey to this foreign country. My reasons for leaving from my country are racial discrimination, political and economic crisis. I had never dreamt of coming to New Zealand but there is someone who prepares my future. Coming to New Zealand has provided me with a second chance to undertake an academic education.

In Burma, there are seven main different ethnic groups- Kachin, Kaya, Karen, Chin, Mon, Myanmar, Rahkai and Shin. Among them I belong to Kachin. Burmese and my mother tongues are my first languages and English is my second one. I can speak a little bit of the Karen language. I have completed the first year of a Bachelor of law. My future plan is finishing my degree but I am not sure yet because everything is unpredictable. I am sure what is happening at the present time but I don’t know what will happen tomorrow.

That I have found myself living in New Zealand is amazing. However, I sometimes feel homesick and lonesome. I enjoy living in a multi- cultural country and an egalitarian society. In my spare time, I love putting on some classical music, and reading adventure and philosophical books in my quiet room. Sometimes, I spend time chatting with online friends without any purpose. Spending time outdoors is one of the activities I am enthusiastic about doing in my spare time rather than staying at home and doing kitchen things. Soccer, table tennis and volleyball are my favorite sports.

I hope you enjoy reading my short story!!!!
